The Köping U19 SM team achieved the incredible this past weekend in Örebro by advancing to the Swedish Final Four for only the second time in their history.
The boys took on KFUM Örebro Saturday at Idrottshuset in Örebro and took a 47-37 halftime lead, increasing it to 67-56 before Örebro mounted a late comeback. Still, Köping held on to win 85-80.
This set up a decisive early morning meeting against Djurgården at Tegelbruket in Örebro with a full crowd of cheering Köping fans in the stands, including a big bass drum.
However, this time, it was Djurgården who shook off early game jitters and took a 46-39 lead at the half, and then extended it to a 13-point cushion midway through the third quarter. Köping’s sharpshooting guards then began to find their range and by the end of the third quarter Köping had pulled ahead 68-66. The fourth quarter saw Köping continue the aerial assault while holding Djurgarden to 16 points to finally come away with a 93-82 victory.
With the win, Köping moves on to the Final Four in Norrköping May 11-12.
Simon Klaasma collected a haul of hardware winning the award for the tournament’s best shooter, the Fair Play award and tournament MVP.
